15 Writing Prompts For All Grade Levels

Have you noticed that your student is falling behind where they need to be with their writing assignments? Then what they need is practice!

Practicing is one of the best ways to improve your student’s writing skills. Below we have compiled a list of 15 writing prompts across all grade levels to get your student started! If you find that they are still struggling with these prompts, it may be time to work with a writing tutor, and WriteAhead, an online tutoring service, would be happy to help!

    High School

The key to a good high school-level writing prompt is to make them think deeply about the world around them. Let your high schooler choose from any of these prompts to work on their writing skills.

    1. Describe your ideal life 10 years from now. What can you do to reach that goal?
    2. What events in your life define you as a person? When and where did they occur?
    3. Would you rather be loved or respected?
    4. What is your favorite piece of media, and how did it impact you?
    5. Do you believe that your social media accurately represents your life? Why or why not?

    Middle School

Since these are just practice writing prompts, your student can have a bit of fun with these ones and be as creative as they like. The goal is still to get them to think introspectively, but to have some fun while doing so. They can work on these prompts independently or with a writing tutor for some extra help!

    1. You can take any one person, any one book, and one other item to a deserted island. Who and what would you bring and why?
    2. Should we fear failure? Explain.
    3. If you could learn what your future would look like, would you want to know?
    4. Which family member would be the best to lead your family through a zombie apocalypse? Why?
    5. Write a scene that includes a) a friend, b) a magic wand, and c) something dangerous.

    Elementary School

Elementary writing prompts should be easy to comprehend, but still creative enough to capture a child’s interest. Often, if the writing assignments in your child’s schoolwork isn’t compelling enough, they won’t feel the need to put forth their best effort, so feel free to tailor any of these prompts to your child’s interests!

    1. What is your first memory? Describe it.
    2. If you could live in any TV show or movie for a day, what would it be and why?
    3. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
    4. Last night, I…
    5. Are you a good winner? Explain.

We hope these writing prompts are helpful on your student’s writing journey, but if you find that they are still struggling, it might be time to consider working with a tutor.
